High-quality legal education is not only about classroom lectures but also involves direct participation in shaping the legal future of our state. Recently, the Head of the AHPFEB Department, Oleksandr Ilchenko, together with higher education students majoring in Law, joined a large-scale public discussion regarding the draft of the new Civil Code of Ukraine.
The event was given a special status by the format of an open parliamentary dialogue, which saw the direct participation of the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Our students demonstrated a high level of professional interest, actively engaging in the discussion and asking substantive questions to the head of the parliament and the drafters of the bill.
During the meeting, the participants thoroughly analyzed the concept of a large-scale recodification of private law. As noted during the presentation, the new Code should become a reliable foundation for the state’s legal infrastructure for the coming decades, since the challenges of European integration, the development of the digital economy, and artificial intelligence require novel legal tools.
Key insights from the project presentation discussed by our students:

New architecture of private law: The draft proposes a logical structure of 9 books covering all aspects of life — from personal and property rights to inheritance and public trust in registries.

Return to the roots: An important change is the return of family law to the Civil Code, as well as the complete integration of private international law.

Law for life after the war: The introduction of innovative institutions, such as the regulation of digital inheritance, the right to be forgotten, and compensation for damages caused by armed aggression.

Measured transitional period: A reform of this scale will not happen instantly. The implementation formula involves adoption, time to prepare society and registries, and enactment only one year after the termination or lifting of martial law.
